Daniel David Dorrel of Brookville passed away May 18, 2023, at Mercy West Hospital, Cincinnati, surrounded by his children.
Dan was born February 4, 1942, at the Flinn Homestead in Springfield Township, Franklin County, to Herbert “Tub” and Lucy Smith Dorrel. He graduated from Brookville High School in 1960.
Dan was a member of the Whitcomb United Methodist Church and fulfilled many capacities. He served in the United States Army, then came back to the home place, Golden Acres, where he farmed, milked cows, and raised Hampshire hogs with his dad and mom.
In 1965, he rescued a girl who was stuck in a snowbank, and carried her to his aunt's house, so she would not get her shoes wet. Dan married that girl, Arlene Canada (Babe) in March of 1968 and she survives.
He was a ten-year member of the Whitcomb Boosters 4-H Club, and a lifetime supporter of Franklin County 4-H. He was a founding member of the Franklin County Antique Machinery Club. Dan also belonged to Indiana Farm Bureau and served as Brookville Township Trustee. Dan drove bus #25, Vocational School students, and student athletes of Brookville Greyhounds and Franklin County Wildcats. He also coached the Production Credit youth baseball team.
Besides Babe, Dan's favorite passion was supporting his kids and grandchildren in their 4-H, school, sports, and church activities. His hobbies included playing cards, cheering Indiana Basketball, and listening to Billy Cunningham on 700 WLW radio.
Those surviving who will cherish Dan's memory include his wife, Arlene, daughter Angie (David Kroll), daughter Jodi (David Amrhein), and son Denny (Sarah Mueller). Grandkids include Howie and Joey Kroll, Eli and Ella Amrhein, and Dexter, Kate, and Dylan Dorrel. Also, his sister, Sara Jane Dorrel, and a sister-in-law, Mabel (Ray) Spradlin, survive. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Dwane.
Visitation was held at Cook-Rosenberger Funeral Home, 929 Main Street, Brookville, Sunday, May 21. The funeral service was 10:30 am, Monday, May 22, at Whitcomb United Methodist Church, with burial following at Big Cedar Cemetery.
