Franklin County girls tennis wrapped up the regular season ahead of a May 17 sectional matchup with Rushville at the Connersville High School courts.

FC took a 3-2 loss to Milan May 9. The Cats won the top two spots but faltered at 3 singles and both doubles. No. 1 singles Nicole Mears won 6-2, 6-1 while next door Lola Mann won 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-7.

May 15 at Richmond, the Red Devils dropped FC 4-1. Kristen Ison and Vivian Silas secured the lone Wildcat win at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-0).

In between was the annual EIAC tourney hosted by Greensburg. Thursday the Cats were all defeated in straight sets in opening round action. Mears faced Greensburg while Mann, Moorea Nobbe (3 singles) and Ison/Silas all battled Batesville. Shannon Stenger and Serena Silas fell to Lawrenceburg at No. 2 doubles.

Early decisions in favor of Rushville gave the Lions a 2-1 advantage Wednesday, with FC needing victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to pull off the team win.

Nobbe had dropped a 6-1, 6-0 final to Isabella Wilson and Mann had lost 7-5, 6-3 to a steady Audrey Gulley. The Wildcats stayed in the match by picking up a No. 2 doubles win in straight sets; Stenger and S. Silas defeated Megan Alexander and Jade Edwards.

The No. 1 doubles match went to a second set tiebreaker between Ison/V. Silas and Lanea Adams/Morgan Beard. The FC duo triumphed to win the match 6-3, 7-6 and knot the team score at 2-2.

Eyes then turned to #1 singles as the Lions' Brooklyn Newbold battled Nicole Mears. FC's ace had won the first set 6-3 but Newbold forced a third set by winning the second go-round 6-4. In another well-played set, Newbold went up 5-3 before Mears won the next game. Some of the match's longest points came in the deciding game, with Newbold winning the final rally and set 6-4.

Connersville topped Rushville 4-1 Friday for the Spartans' first title in eight years.
