FCHS Class of 2023 leaves its mark
May 31, 2023 at 1:02 p.m.
Keeping the tradition going strong, several FCHS seniors came out to the dam on Friday to carve their graduation year. This has been an ongoing tradition for years and not only does it provide seniors with a sense of finality and completion, but it also highlights them for all of their hard work and effort during their time in high school.
Stephanie Ison - Park Ranger for the US Army Corp Engineers - had the students gather at the top of the dam where she provided donuts, drinks, forms to sign, pamphlets over the lake, and gave the seniors a quick rundown of how their number was laid out. She took the time to explain how Brookville is fortunate due to the view. The seniors can see their graduating year on the dam from graduation, which is a rarity as most other schools don't have that.
This tradition dates to the 80s and with immense support from the community, it has become a unique and popular display of pride for our seniors.
With a big group out to help this year, the numbers were completed in 30 minutes! These seniors and the help provided broke a record this year!
When asked why they chose to come out and help, all had the same line of thought:
"I wanted to participate more than anything. This was enjoyable," Caleb Broering states. "We've earned it."
The '23' looks incredible and these students now have a fantastic core memory to remember their time at FCHS. Thanks to Brookville IGA for the donuts, Sharon Volk and Sara Shaver as the senior sponsor and class officer, Stephanie Ison and her family, and Whitney Gillman, who also had a part in carving out the 23 herself.
The seniors who came out are as follows:
Ethan Sullivan - FFA
Avery McDaniel - Spanish Club, Dancz Catz, M-Cats
Jack Harpring - Marching Band
Lendon Sizemore - Troop 45 of the Scouts
Kierstyn Kerr - Spanish Club, Dance Cats, M-Cats
Caleb Broering
Travis Schwartz
Andrew Barrett
Congratulations to the seniors of 2023!
