Lady Patriots’ season ends in extra innings

The Lady Patriots made it to the regional championship game which took place Tuesday evening in Liberty. The #10 ranked Triton Central Lady Tigers and the #8 UC Lady Patriots were tied 3-3 after seven innings. A double in the top of the eighth inning by the Lady Tigers scored a run and gave them a 4-3 win.
Triton Central scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when a triple plated their leadoff hitter. AnnaLea Adams started the game off with a double for UC but was stranded on third base after a strikeout ended the inning. In the second, Triton Central scored again to go up 2-0.
Adams got the Lady Patriots on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run; UC was down 2-1 after three frames. Both teams stayed off the scoreboard until the top of the sixth when a Triton Central solo home run gave them a 3-1 lead. Adams led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and a Harley Pilgrim single knocked in Adams to make it 3-2.
The bottom of the seventh started with three walks and with Pilgrim at the plate again she watched four balls go by and took first base while Natalie Long walked home, tying the game up at 3-3.
Bailey Mathews was on the mound for UC and started the eighth off getting two quick outs, but a triple and a double by Triton Central scored another run giving them a 4-3 lead. Mathews finished off the inning by striking out the next Lady Tigers' batter. Carsyn Garrett got on with a double in the bottom of the eighth, but the Lady Patriots finished the game by striking out three times.
Mathews took the loss for UC, going eight innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out 10. Adams led the Lady Patriots with three of the team's six hits; the Auburn commit also scored two of UC's three runs. Adams finished the season with 16 home runs, a new Union County record; she now has 42 in three seasons as a Lady Patriot.
Union County finished the season with a record of 21-5 and 8-0 in Tri Eastern Conference games, while earning their fourth conference title in a row and 13th overall championship. This season was also their fourth sectional title in a row and their ninth championship since 2006.
