Union County wrestlers filled eight weight classes at the IHSAA Wrestling Sectional at Franklin County last Saturday with a freshman and a senior advancing to the regional at Richmond this Saturday, Feb. 8.

Morgan Krom placed third at 160-lbs., and Evan Wolf finished fourth at 138-lbs.

“The two moving on was completely expected,” UC coach A.J. Bryson said. “I would have been shocked and disappointed if they had not moved on.”
Krom also finished the day at three wins and one loss. The UC junior began with a 9-0 major decision over Batesville senior Nick Nobbe. He also defeated Cooper Barker of South Dearborn 7-4, and defeated Greensburg senior Eric Lowe, 12-7, to finish third on the podium. His loss was to East Central’s Kasey Carr, who finished second in the 160-lb. weight class.

“Morgan is probably the hardest working kid in the room at any given time,” Bryson said. “He had the most wins and got a good draw which was expected.”

After a first-round bye, Wolf went on to win two matches and lost two.

The UC freshman began with a pin win over South Dearborn junior Jacob Leder in the second round. His second win was an 11-0 major decision over Rusty Phillips from Milan.

His losses were to the eventual 138-lb. champion, Adam Crouch of Franklin County, and Rushville’s Garrett Bergen in the championship round.
“Evan Wolf. I get tickled every time he wins,” Bryson said. “It’s not always expected of a freshmen thrown into a heavily competitive weight class.”

The top six in each weight class are recognized on the podium at sectional: but only the top four advance to the regional round.

UC’s Emma Sharpe (113), Ben Tom (195) and Nate Reffitt (285) received ribbons and were also  recognized on the podium.
UC’s Jordan Takara and Skylar Edwards were out with injuries.

“A good day overall, but I would have loved to have  a couple more move on,” Bryson said. “This is a rebuilding year, so I will take what I can get. But hope to do better next year.”

The IHSAA Regional is at Richmond High School on Saturday, Feb. 8.
