A lop-sided shutout is a great start but here is the rest of the story...
Chloe Greene’s start on the mound worked to perfection. The UC sophomore fanned six-of-seven batters in the first two innings to get the five-inning, 23-0, shutout headed in the right direction.
Then, after two scoreless innings, Tori Russell opened the third inning with the first of the Lady Patriots seven home runs.
Sophia Knock hit one out of the park with two runners on in the fourth inning and the Lady Trojans made their first of three pitching changes.
Annalea Adams tagged a long ball over the center field fence with a runner on base to start the fifth inning. Three batters later, New Castle brought on another pitcher. Bailey Mathews took one pitch and then hit a grand slam homer off the newest Lady Trojan pitcher.
Finally, with two outs in the fifth, Adams and Knock hit their second home runs back-to-back style. Then, Shelby Hill joined the home run hitters with a center field shot to make it back-to-back-to-back UC home runs before the final out.
“Seven home runs in a single game is a school record,” Gray said. “We had six at Cowan one year.”
Union County scored 8 runs in the third inning, 3 in the fourth and 12 in the fifth.
Meanwhile, Greene faced 18 batters, struck out 11, gave up two hits and allowed no runs.
Knock was 4-for-5 at the plate, 4 RBI and scored 4 runs. Adams was 3-for-5, 4 RBI, and scored four runs. Tori Russell was 3-for-4, 4 RBI, and scored 3 runs. Bailey Mathews was 2-for-3, 5 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Overall, UC finished with 23 runs on 21 hits and left two on base.
