“We played really well,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “Cowan is much improved and has a really good sophomore pitcher we saw in the first game and Mathews pitched a good game. It came down to timely hitting.”
A 0-0 tie score going into the fourth inning disappeared when Annalea Adams broke the ice with a double and scored on Shelby Hill’s single. The timely hits put UC up, 1-0.
Cowan tied the score in fourth inning but went hitless in the fifth.
UC broke the 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth inning. Sophia Knockoff with a walk and Hill, Greene, Mathews hit singles for the final two runs and a 3-1 win on the road.
UC freshman pitcher Bailey Mathews faced 26 batters, allowed 5 hits, walked one and struck out 5 in five innings.
Game 2
Chloe Greene picked up the win on the mound in the second game when the Lady Pats scored 12 runs on 10 hits in seven innings.
UC got out early and scored in the first inning and went on from there - 7 runs in the third, 2 in the fourth and one in the seventh for good measure. The Lady Blackhawks got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, but fell short by 11 at the end of seven.
Freshman shortstop Annalea Adams was 2-for-3 at the plate including a third inning home run, 3 RBI and scored 2 runs.
Greene finished with 15 strikeouts and 5 hits allowed.
“Our lineup is really young, six of nine starters have never played in a high school game before and are learning on the fly,” Gray said. “Overall, it was a good day.”
