A few costly mistakes early led to Franklin County varsity softball (0-2) dropping their second straight game to begin the 2021 campaign. Host Hagerstown briefly surrendered the lead in the third inning Friday night, but came back to win 8-7 on a few timely hits late in the game.

According to coach Alex McCool, the Lady Wildcats struggled to drive in runs with players in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base.

Bree Bischoff pitched a complete game for FC, half of the runs being earned; she fanned four. Anne Becker (3 singles) and Maci Lake (single, triple) had multiple-hit games on offense. Lake added an RBI and stolen base. Emma Stadtmiller drove in two and Bischoff one. Kensee Ferman belted a double.
The Cats enter a busy stretch of games, starting with the home opener April 7 against Centerville. First pitch is 5 p.m.

JV softball starts 1-2.

Franklin County’s junior varsity softball squad traveled to the Center Grove Invitational Saturday, defeating Terre Haute South while falling to Terre Haute North.

North won 5-3, getting five unearned runs off Bella Lee in the fifth inning. Lee struck out 11 in a complete game effort. Shelby Rosenberger had 2 singles and an RBI; Cami Barker and Kendal Cain knocked in single runs.

The young Cats had an exciting finish against South. After TH tied the game in the top of seven, FC was down to its final out in the bottom of the frame. Kristen Ison beat out an infield single and went to second on a passed ball. Barker smacked a line drive to center for the walk-off hit and 10-9 win.

Ferman had two of FC’s 10 hits, a double and triple with 3 RBI. Karlie Jones added 2 hits, one a double. Lee, Rosenberger and Shaden Galyen added RBIs. Lee was the winning pitcher; Cain started, giving up 5 earned runs and fanning 5.

The team had lost the season opener March 29 at Ross, 4-3. Ross scored its four runs in the fifth, all earned off Lee, who recorded 7 punchouts. Rosenberger had a double and RBI and Kylie Lea a 2-bagger and 2 RBI.
