Union County off to great start

The Patriots handed the visitors an 18-1 setback in the first game before the Raiders turned the tables to win the second game, 21-9.
“We came out and played extremely well in the first game,” UC coach Jordan Ashbrook said. “In the second game, our pitching and defense kind of gave out on us.”

“Mason pitched well today,” Ashbrook said.
Winning pitcher Mason Hornung faced 16 batters and gave up one hit in the first four innings against Shenandoah and let the Patriots do the rest.
UC scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and an even dozen in the third.
At the end of four innings, Hornung allowed one run on four hits (including a double), eight strikeouts, was 3-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBI, and scored 3 runs. Nate Reffitt came on in the fifth inning to finish on the mound.
Batting a full round in the first inning, UC put four runs on the scoreboard and added two in the second.
The Patriots batted just one shy of two complete rounds in the third on five hits, five walks, and four batters hit by a pitch. Mason Wicker had a single and double, Hornung doubled, and Eric Burdine was safe at first on a bunt that neither the pitcher nor third baseman could get to and walked home, three walks later.
Five Raiders went to the plate in the top of the fifth inning where Reffitt walked one, struck out one and gave up one hit. Final score UC 18, Shenandoah 1.
Game 2
The refreshed Raiders came back in game two with 21 runs on 11 hits to beat the Patriots, 21-9.
The Patriots started well, four runs in the first inning and a 8-4 lead after four innings but weren’t prepared for Shenandoah’s 17 run rally in the final three innings.
The Raiders had 13 total hits with five in the first four innings and eight down the stretch, including four extra-base hits.
UC countered with numerous pitching changes on the mound. Starting pitcher Alex VanWinkle gave up six hits and three runs before relieved at the end of the third, but nothing worked.
“Still happy with our offense today,” Ashbrook said. “You can tell we’ve got some young guys who are basically red-shirt freshmen who didn’t get to play last season due to the pandemic. We’ll focus on the positives from today and move on.”

The Patriots host Winchester on Saturday, ) and visit North Decator on Tuesday.
