Wildcat baseball posts 3-2 week

Franklin County varsity baseball opened play last week with a home win over Connersville. FC was led offensively by Garrett Ertel’s two hits and four RBI, with brother Brant chipping in a pair of hits.

Connersville came back Thursday to split the two-game Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference set, winning 8-1 at CHS. The Spartans scored twice in the first, adding 3-run innings in both the fifth and sixth stanzas.

Chase Burton had FC’s lone RBI and Hunter Geis smacked a double. B. Ertel took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 8. Garrett Ertel finished up, punching out 3.

In a home weekend doubleheader with Union County, the Wildcats earned a sweep of the Patriots. In the opener, FC scored all 15 runs in the first three frames to finish off the Pats in five (15-2). Alex VanWinkle suffered the loss, surrendering seven earned runs.

Garrison Siedling earned the win, getting 6 strikeouts. Brant Ertel was 4-of-4 (all doubles) with a pair of RBI and Dominic Reeves 3-of-3 with three knocked in. Geis doubled and tripled and drove in 1. Burton had 2 hits and an RBI and Austin Short a double and RBI. Conner Roleson added an RBI.

Game two was a bit closer but the Cats still shut down the Patriots, 7-1. The hosts had all the runs they needed with a 3-run first, adding two more in the third and later the sixth.

Brady Brandenburg started and won for FC; Roleson finished in relief. Joe Fields collected 2 hits and 2 RBI in the win and Remington Watters added 2 knocks. Freshman Mason Stewart took the loss for UC; only one of his five runs allowed were earned. VanWinkle had 2 hits for the Pats.

FC fell 6-5 at Batesville Monday. B. Ertel had 2 hits and 2 RBI with Reeves knocking in 2 as well. Joe Fields took the loss.
FC (7-3, 2-3) hosts Batesville Thursday.
