Bypassing the annual Joe Moehring Invitational at Richmond’s Elks Club on Monday, the Lady Wildcats instead opened the 2021 campaign at the annual Union County Invitational the next morning. Behind a very good 79 from soph Nicole Mears, FC carded a team total of 370 for the bronze medal. Mears’ score placed her fourth overall individually as Batesville’s junior sensation Emma Weiler won the event with a clean 70. The Weiler sisters – Addyson (74) is a freshman – led BHS to the title with help from Josie Meyer’s 74; the Bulldogs shot an impressive 314. Richmond, led by Zoe Brock’s 84, was a distant second at 363. Connersville (425) and East Central (514) brought up the rear.
Sophomore Crystal Calihan came in at 87 while classmate Lillie Graf and senior Kelsie Brackney each fired a 102. Jacy Grimmeissen, another 10th-grader for the Wildcats, rounded out Cats’ scoring with a 107.
The Lady Cats nearly pulled off a runner-up at Greensburg Country Club Saturday, shooting a collective 366 to come up two shy of Heritage Christian’s 364. Batesville won its third consecutive tournament to begin the young season, the Dogs collecting a 339. The host Pirates were 8th at 414, with EC (466) and Rushville (473) trailing the pack.
Mears stayed consistent with a second straight 79 in 18-hole play. It was good enough for third overall behind the elder Weiler’s winning 74. Calihan also placed in the top-10 of participants by carding 88. Graf improved to 94 while Brackney and Grimmeissen had identical 105 scorecards. Batesville’s Meyer added a top-5 finish with an 80.
Rain was in the forecast all of this week but matches are scheduled at Brook Hill Thursday against Batesville, followed by the Lapel Invitational Saturday.
