The Lady Patriots scrimmaged Richmond last week under new coach Allison Kassens and held their own.

“I was really proud to see their growth in confidence tonight,” said Kassens. 'They brought more intensity and more drive and desire to win.”

Each session was a roller coaster ride with both teams experiencing ups and downs. In general, UC opened slow in each session, and bounced back to catch up before the Red Devils finished strong. Both coaches were busy making substitutions and adjustments. Scrimmages are a learning tool for players and coaches before the regular season begins.

This year's Lady Patriots’ roster lists two seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen from which to field JV and varsity teams.

“To see their desire to win tonight was huge,” Kassens said. “And we have room to grow.”

Kasey Lang and Hannah Wulf return for their senior year. The junior class has a solid offering in Carly McCashland, Chloe Greene, Brooke Fields, Shelby Hill, Hailey Tidwell, Hannah Vaughn and Elyse Peters. Sophomores Jenna Elliott and Sara Cox and freshmen Katie McCashland and Autumn Cantrell stand ready to take the floor as needed.

The Lady Patriots start at home Thursday, Aug. 19 (tonight) to host Knightstown in the first Tri-Eastern Conference match of the season.

“I'm excited to see what the TEC has to offer this season,” said Kassens. “Haven't taken much of a look at it yet, but we will be out and about scouting so we know what to expect.”
