“We learned a lot today,” UC coach Brad Abbott said of the Lady Patriots’ first time on the field and against someone other than their own teammates.
“We lost a few (girls) last year,” Abbott said. “And have four new girls this year. This year should be interesting.”
Senior leadership will come from Sophia Knock and Lilly Witter. Four Juniors (Lillian Fields, Michaela Tolford, Cecelia Groen, Keilynn Jones) and two sophomores (Kyleigh Payne, Harmony Horning) add more experience to the team.
The freshman class boosts the girls soccer team roster to 14.
The UC girls and boys begin the season with packed schedules.
“The first three weeks we have three games a week,” Abbott said. “And four away games in seven days.”
UC soccer teams (girls and boys) schedules began on Tuesday of this week, continue on Thursday (today) and Saturday.
Batesville visited on Tuesday. UC is at New Castle Thursday and at Greensburg on Saturday.
“It should be interesting,” Abbott repeated himself.
The Union County boys soccer team went into scrimmage a bit short-handed last Saturday.
“We have 10 eligible players,” UC coach Dave Reeder said. “We are young, a lot of sophomores and freshmen on the team - first-time players who have never played before and are ineligible for one reason or another (coming off injuries and/or not enough practices).”
The IHSAA says 10 practices are required to start a season.
So the Patriots played four sessions (15 to 30 minutes each) with a running clock, and five minute breaks between sessions.
“They finished well,” Reeder said of the scrimmage team. “They gave 110 percent the entire time. They were tired but they didn’t give up.”
Scrimmage gives coaches an opportunity to see what is needed to grow and learn.
“Overall I’m absolutely pleased with what I saw today and ready to move on,” Reeder said.
