Lady Wildcats pitch shutout

Franklin County girls soccer played a nearly flawless match last Tuesday at the Wildcat pitch, peppering the New Castle goal three times in each half for a 6-0 final.
“It was a really pretty game with a lot of ball movement and connected passes,” said coach Cynthia Adams. “Solid defending was our best offense as we had a lot of immediate transition from the back to the front.”
It took half of the opening period for either team to find the back of the net, but once they did, the Wildcats kept it going.
With 17:23 left in the first half and shortly after a mandatory water break due to extreme heat, senior Claudia Mauntel passed to classmate Jordan Nichols in the 6-yard box; Nichols banged it through for the first of her three goals (hat trick!) on the evening.
Franklin County’s final eight minutes of the half were crucial in gaining separation from the visiting Trojans. At 7:58, junior Kamryn Dozier took a free kick just outside the 18-yard box after Nichols was fouled in the same vicinity. Dozier swept the ball over the keeper with her right leg for a 2-0 lead. As the clock dipped beneath five minutes, junior Lily Knapp completed a breakaway by slipping inside the corner of the goalie box and delivering the Wildcats’ third goal of the period.
Meanwhile, junior Maegan Pearson was stopping what offensive attacks New Castle could muster throughout the match. The goalkeeper recorded the win, with the help of a stout defensive line. Freshman Liz Wendel made her varsity debut as keeper in the second half, recording three saves.
After the break, Nichols put two more into the netting and Dozier added one more. Mauntel finished with three assists and sophomore Lillian Ralph earned one. FC finished with 27 shots on goal, led by Nichols’ 9 and Dozier’s 8; senior Halee Barker added 4.
On defense, junior Paige Ashcraft stole 2 balls, with freshman Mackenzie Brzezinski, senior Kaitlyn Brunemann, junior Daniella Bulach and freshman Audrey Weaver each swiping 1. Senior Morgan Stewart took 5 corners and Pearson 1.
For her efforts when FC wasn’t in possession, Mauntel was named player of the match. “Claudia had an excellent work rate on both ends of the pitch,” said Adams.
FC visits conference rival Lawrenceburg this evening.
