Patriots Basketball– Season Opener

The Spartans held the Patriots scoreless through the first quarter (15-0) and without a field goal in the first half.
“Connersville plays with a lot of intensity and that is hard to match in practice. We expected to be a little bit shell shocked in the beginning,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “But to go the first half without running our offense is not acceptable.”
UC erased the goose egg on the scoreboard before halftime (33-2) with a pair of Austin Wollyung free throws.
“They were attacking us and forcing us to dribble before we were ready to,” McCool said. “We had too many turnovers.”
After the halftime break, Reece Watterson scored UC’s first field goal and played a good quarter of defense that helped t0 9 of their 15 Spartan turnovers.
“Connersville does a good job of pressuring the ball and makes it hard to get the ball inside,” McCool said.
UC came back with a Ragen Bias 3-pointer and 3-of-4 freebies to go with a pair of Ty Elleman free throws. Final score was 55 12.
McCool was looking forward to the extended holiday weekend.
“Got a lot of work to do before next Friday,” McCool said. “We will come back in this weekend, watch film and try to get better.”

Union County hosts TEC opponents Knightstown on Friday, Dec. 3 and Hagerstown on Friday, Dec. 10, at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
