Patriots Wrestling– UC wrestlers get TEC win

Union County handed Knightstown a 36-30 Tri-Eastern Conference setback at last week’s 3-way meet at Connersville.

With one senior two juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen, the young Patriots are off to a good start.

“We wrestled really well both at Saturday matches (Elwood Inv.) and on Tuesday at the 3-way meet—especially on a team not at full strength yet,” UC head coach AJ Bryson said. “It seems like most teams are still battling Covid protocols so we’re matching up well with teams right now even with only six wrestlers.”

UC forfeited eight matches and Knightstown two in the first match.
“Knightstown and Connersville were funky meets—they have upper weights filled and I’ve got most of the lower weight classes so it was tight just based on forfeits,” Bryson said. “Picking up a win against the Panthers with only one actual match wrestled and then losing to Connersville by one forfeit. If we’ve got some kids back from quarantine, we win that one too.

To start, Cal Rudnick (106), Carson Whitley (113), Jesus Aquino-Morales (126), and Tanner Burns (132) won by forfeit.
On the mat, Jordan Takara (160) and Nate Reffitt (285) won by pin against Knightstown opponents in the 36-30 TEC victory.
The Patriots came up short to Connersville, 36-33, and the Spartans defeated Knightstown, 48-12, to round out the 3-way meet.
In the head-to-head matches, Aquino-Morales (126) defeated Connersville’s Gavin Lemen, Burns (132) pinned Aric Fox and Takara (160) pinned Wesley Wise.
Rudnick (106), Carson Whitley (113) and Reffitt won by forfeit.
As the season progresses, so too will the Patriot wrestling team.

“Next week, I expect we’re almost at full steam and will start rolling through some match-ups,” Bryson said.
