CENTERVILLE – By halftime of Saturday night's boys basketball game at Centerville, Franklin County's first-year coach Mark Foster could safely get a visual of his first win at the varsity level.

His Wildcats outscored a severely overmatched Bulldog squad 16-0 in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-4 lead into the locker room. Early in the fourth, with several starters having exited, the Cats forced the IHSAA's new mercy rule as a running clock ticked down to a 58-11 final.

Midway through the second period, FC's captain Chad Cox had nearly as many two-handed slams as Centerville did points. His third came on a runout following a steal to make it 25-4. With defensive pressure continuing, Cox dished to fellow senior Austin Hill on another fast-break opportunity.

Kodi Smith, a former Connersville Spartan also seeking his initial win, had no choice but to call timeout with a 23-point deficit. The Dogs were able to run some time off the clock to delay the inevitable, only allowing an Aden Gerrian three with less than a minute to go in the half.

The visitors also scored the first seven points of the last half, Cox getting a lay-in followed by junior Jace Lee's putback and classmate Brant Ertel's triple. Centerville put in the next two goals and actually strung together a 7-5 sequence that saw Lee earn two more before assisting Cox on a 3-ball. Junior Tanner Weartz made one of FC's six bench 3-pointers for a 45-11 score going into the fourth.

Weartz and Cox connected in the opening minute of quarter four to set the clock in motion. Later, Hill and juniors Brady Morehead and Peyton McCreary would spot up from beyond the arc to end the damage.

Cox opened the night by hitting 1 of 2 at the foul stripe, then counted an assist when senior Bridger Bolos scored. Cox's next bucket came off a steal and ended with his hands in the cylinder. His second dunk was of the tip variety, sending through a Lee miss and firing up the FC faithful.

After two Bolos free throws, the Bulldogs finally got on the board to make it 9-2. Cox scored the next five ahead of a late tip-in for the home team. FC hit the first break at 14-4.

Sophomore Eli Butt started things in the second frame with a trey. Gerrian found Cox for a reverse lay-in and CHS committed a pair of 5-second violations in the backcourt. Ertel went 2 of 2 at the line, then passed to Hill for a 23-4 lead.

Cox got his first 20-plus game of the season, going for 21. Ten Wildcats scored and FC totaled 9 triples.

The first double weekend approaches and both are on the road – Friday at Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference foe Rushville and Saturday evening at South Ripley.

A lackluster third period by the Cats last Tuesday denied the team an EIAC road win. A hoop for Ertel early in the frame had FC enjoying a 34-20 advantage. LHS then outscored the guests 39-22 the rest of the way to record a 59-56 win.

After an eight-point third helped the Tigers go ahead 43-40, the Wildcats stayed within two possessions at a minimum right up to the end.

Two Bolos FTs gave the visitors a 55-54 lead before a Wildcat timeout at 1:36. Jackson Bobo, the Tigers' 6-foot-8-inch center, then drew a block while scoring and completed the 3-point play. Gerrian, whose 9 fourth-quarter points kept FC in the game, added a free throw to make it 57-56 in favor of LHS. Dahya Patel hit a pair of free ones with 53 seconds left. The Tigers' Logan Rohrer missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but three different Cats missed looks from deep in the final 20 seconds.

In a game of runs, LHS got out to a 9-3 lead as Ertel's opening 3-pointer was erased. Garrett Yoon hit his second 3 to make it 12-4. FC rallied to tie the game, then go ahead. Bolos hit a vintage 3-pointer, followed by a Cox stuff and the latter's 3-point make at the buzzer.

Cox stayed hot by hitting another three, drawing a block on defense and connecting on 2 FTs. Ertel's transition bucket forced a Tiger timeout at 19-12. It failed to slow down the torrid Cats, whose run reached 22-0 on short scores by Ertel and Cox and Butt's triple. Big man JD Stokes later stepped out for 3 and a 29-17 lead. Lee ended the half with a bomb to make it 32-19.

The LHS comeback was aided by Rohrer, who was held out of the first half by coach Brad Cutter. His hoop got the hosts within 10 at 34-24. Lee hit 1 of 2 at the line and Cox added two, but the Tiger spurt hit 17-3 when Patel's 3 tied things at 37. Out of an FC timeout, Rohrer added his 7th points of the quarter. Gerrian switched the lead with a 3 before LHS closed the frame with four.
Ertel hit a three to tie at 43 but a tip by Bobo later made it 52-46, Tigers. Gerrian halved the deficit with a trey. Gerrian also pulled FC within two at 54-52 with another long ball.

Bobo led all with 16 points. Cox set the pace for FC with 14 as Ertel had 13 and Gerrian 12. Yoon and Patel each added a dozen for LHS.
