“I’m pleased with the win,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “After taking a week off and missing two games of basketball, we worked them hard this week.”
There was little doubt about being ready. The Lady Patriots ran up a 7-2 lead in the first quarter, including the first of eight UC 3-point shots in the game.
Brooke Fields and Faith Richardson field goals put UC on the scoreboard to start and senior Lauren Alldredge finished with a trey before the quarter break.
The Lady Raiders outscored UC by four (13-9) in the second quarter, but couldn’t match the Lady Pats’ 3-point shooters and the 16-15 halftime score.
“Three girls scored nine points, one with five and on down,” Gray said. “If we can get balanced scoring like that, we’re okay.”
Alldredge, Fields and Ally Gray were the game’s leading scorers with 9 points each. They were also part of UC’s 3-point squad along with Peityn Gillman and Carly McCashland. Alldredge finished with three treys, Gray two, and Fields, Gillman and McCashland one.
Shenandoah surged ahead, 24-21, at the end of the third quarter before a 16-3 UC run in the final eight minutes and a 38-27 final score.
Union County’s roster was down to 12 girls for the Saturday night game which resulted in the junior varsity playing only two quarters.
“We may be small, but we can guard,” Gray said. “And when we take on teams our size, we’re pretty physical.”
Shenandoah’s 15 fouls put UC at the free throw line seven times that gave the Lady Pats eight points, (8-of-12) – compared to the Lady Raiders one time at the charity stripe with one-of -two shots successful.
Shenandoah was led by junior Kayla Muterspaugh’s seven points, Addie Pruett’s six and Lydia Schwagmeier’s five.
“Yes, I’m pretty excited about the win,” Gray said. “Now we get back to work to prepare for a game with Hagerstown next week and at South Decatur on the weekend.”

The Lady Patriots travel to South Decatur (1-6) on Saturday, Dec. 11 and return home Wednesday, Dec. 15 to host 5-1 Tri High.
