Wayne was born on October 18, 1924, and is the son of the late George and Hazel Harlan. On January 10, 1948, he married Betty A. (Gephart) Harlan at the Four Mile Church of the Brethren in Union County. Mrs. Harlan survives.
Wayne graduated with the class of 1942 from Liberty High School.
He went on to farm for most of his life. He was a devoted member and took great pride in his involvement in the Masonic Lodge A&FM of Liberty Lodge # 58. He attained the 33rd degree of Master Mason and Scottish rite. Wayne was also a longtime member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church.
Wayne was an avid reader and loved working crossword puzzles. In his earlier years, he enjoyed fox hunting and taking trips out west with his wife, Betty. He was also known for transporting watermelons from southern Indiana to local grocery stores.
Wayne devoted much of his time to helping others. For more than 10 years, he volunteered as a driver transporting veterans to the V.A. so they could receive the care they needed. Throughout several years, Wayne donated over 44 gallons of blood. Before it later closed, Richmond Community Blood Bank ceremoniously named a room in their facility after him.
Along with his wife, Betty, Mr. Harlan is survived by his sons, Ted Harlan and Steven Harlan; grandchildren, Matthew, Robert, Kaleb, Daniel, and Douglas; 2 great-grandchildren, Carlitos and Aspen.
In addition to his parents, Wayne is preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Harlan Franklin; a son, David Harlan; brother, Lowell Harlan and an infant sister, Ruth Harlan.
Visitation for Wayne will be held on December 10, 2021 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at Urban Winkler Liberty Funeral Home, 310 N. Main St. Liberty, IN 47353. A memorial service with Masonic rites will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home.
