Lady Patriots Basketball– Earn first TEC win

It was Hagerstown week in Liberty last week with the girls and boys basketball games played three days apart.

The Wednesday night girls game went to Union County, 36-32. The following Saturday at noon, the Patriots held off the Tigers, 44-43.

The Hagerstown Lady Tigers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead against Union County last week, but trailed, 14-8, going into the second quarter. UC wrapped four 3-point field goals around Carly McCashland’s steal and 2-point basket in a 14-4 run to close out the first quarter.

Union County finished the game with 13 field goals and nine were 3-pointers.

“We’ve got to find more ways to score,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “We missed some shots in the lane, but 27 to nothin’ on 3-pointers.”

The Lady Pats were up, 14-6, at the first quarter break and led 20-16 at the halftime intermission.

“We did not play well,” Gray said. “But I would rather win ugly than not win at all.”

The Lady Pats didn’t score a 3-pointer in the third quarter. But Hagerstown came back after halftime with a 10-4 run to close within two, 26-24, at the three-quarter stop.

Senior Brooke Fields set UC on the right path with five consecutive points at the top of the fourth period. The junior point guard scored a pair of free throws followed by the first of two Fields 3-point field goals to help the Lady Pats’ 36-32 TEC win over the Lady Tigers.

Fields finished with 15 points, including, four 3-point field goals to lead all scorers. Hagerstown senior Maddie Ward led the Lady Tigers with 13 points.

Jr. Lady Pats win

Hagerstown was without a junior varsity, so UC Athletic Director Ryan Overholt found a replacement – Franklin County, actually Franklin County’s C team. It was good experience for both teams.

The C Lady Wildcats fell to Union County’s JV, 27-6.

Next opponent
The Lady Patriots go to Winchester on Saturday and then play in the Waldron Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 28.
