Fourth quarter defense lifted Union County over Oldenburg Academy last week on the Twisters’ home court.

“The second half was a lot better,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “We took care of the ball a little better in the fourth quarter.”

The Patriots fell behind 10-8 after the first quarter and 22-18, at half-time before fourth quarter defense made a difference.

UC outscored the Twisters, 13-7, in the third period and didn’t stop there.
UC senior Keaghan Coyle opened the fourth period with back-to-back baskets and Oldenburg countered with their final buckets in the game.

“We played with more intensity in the second half and worked the ball around better,” McCool said. “And it made all the difference.”

Union County finished with a 6-0 run while limiting OA to four total points in the final eight minutes.

Coyle’s 17 points was the only double digit in the score column. Ty Elleman finished with 8 and Ragen Bias 6.

The Twisters were led by C.J. Grote’s 9 points, Frank Moorman 8 and Dyllon Stewart 6.

The Patriots out-rebounded OA, 24-17 with Mason Stewart clearing the boards of 8 rebounds.

UC reserves win

The Union County JV led through the first half, but stumbled to a 31-27 deficit at the end of the third quarter on a 3-point buzzer beater by OA sophomore Jacob Cornelius.

UC’s quick turnaround (a pair of Brad Meadows 3-point shots) at the top of the fourth quarter put the Pats up 33-31. The Jr. Twisters tied the score once, 33-33, but failed to match UC’s 8-4 run down the stretch. Union County beat Oldenburg, 41-39, with balanced scoring.

Next opponent
UC is scheduled to play in the Preble Shawnee Tourney Dec. 28-29. Then to start the new year, the Pats travel to Morristown Jan. 4.
