Batesville visited Union County’s Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium before the winter break and returned home with their second win of the season wrapped up in a 63-34 win over the Patriots.

Union County led 5-0 behind the senior leadership of Austin Wollyung (3-pt.) and Keaghan Coyle (2 pt.) before the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard (1-of-2 free throws). Wollyung hit another 3-point shot to go with a pair of 2-pointers by Grady Swafford and Ragen Bias to set the first quarter score at 14-6.

Trailing by eight, Batesville came back with a 10-2 run to even the score, 16-16, in the first five minutes of the second quarter and closed out the first half with a 22-21 lead.

“In the first half, we moved the basketball well and played our game,” UC coach Alex McCool said. “After halftime, they hit a couple shots and then we had one turnover after another.”

Batesville remained strong in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Patriots, 41-13. Sam Johnson led the Bulldogs with 21 points, including six 3-point field goals, with three in the third period. Seniors Cody Mohr and Cade Kaiser added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“I don’t know what happened after halftime,” Mc-Cool said. “After a couple shots, they left the best shooter open, kind of gave up.”

Wollyung led Union County with 8 points, Mason Stewart and Ragen Bias with 7 each and Coyle had 6.
