Union County will have a new coach this year. Ryleigh Kennedy (Waltz) is a former Lady Patriot who in 2010 was regional champion and a state qualifier. Ryleigh was also a TEC All-Conference selection all four years with UC. She continued her career collegiately at Northern Kentucky University, playing four years. Ryleigh graduated from NKU with her nursing degree and has made her way back to Indiana. Kennedy has set goals for herself as a first-year coach that include finishing in the top three in conference matches and she would also like to send several of her players on to compete at regional or beyond.
Curry has a very good shot to improve on her impressive finish last season. Kennedy stated, “Olivia has improved her striking immensely since practice began in June; she has stepped up to be a leader and is someone I can count on to post good scores this year.” She feels the same about her other senior hitting the links for UC this year. Morgan Ball has impressed Kennedy by working hard on her chipping and putting. “The short game is where she is really getting better, which should help in keeping strokes off for Morgan,” said Kennedy.
The Lady Patriots will bring back Kassens, who has worked hard and made it her personal goal to reach regional this year. Kennedy also has two sophomores returning with Peyton Shepler and Madysson McClure; both girls played last season and the nerves showed at some point for both, but they also showed signs of promise. With a freshman season under their belts, Kennedy said, “We should see improvement in their games from last year, they have both been working hard, and it's paying off.”
UC will have one freshman on the course this year. Newcomer Peiton Gillman has her coach excited and thinks she will add a lot to the team this year.
“I think we have an all-around solid team … we have set pretty high goals for ourselves,” stated Kennedy. “They have been improving every practice since early June, really working on everyone's short games, and I'm excited to see what they can do in Richmond (Monday).”
Last year UC finished seventh out of nine teams at the Richmond Invitational.
