Centerville slipped by Union County, 6-5, in the first game of the 2021 IHSAA Baseball Sectional at Centerville last week.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead after three innings, but the Patriots came back to tie it up in the top of the fourth.

Eric Burdine reached first on a walk. Centerville’s error handling Mason Hornung’s grounder put the UC pitcher on first and moved Burdine to third.
Then with two outs, Mason Tipton hit a double to left field to score both Burdine and Hornung to tie the score, 2-2.

Still tied after five innings, UC opened the sixth inning with Burdine at first on a single and Mason Wicker at the plate. The UC catcher fouled the first pitch but made contact with the second - an RBI line drive home run to left field that put the Patriots in front, 4-2.

Down by two in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs’ infielder Alex Wandersee hit a 3-run triple and scored on Logan Drook’s bunt. Four runs scored to put Centerville in front, 6-4.

In the top of the seventh inning, Blake Richards reached first base on a hit to center field and moved to second when VanWinkle was hit by a pitch. John Ridenour’s sacrifice advanced Richards to third and VanWinkle to second and Richards scored UC’s final run a ground out - one shy of the Bulldogs.

The Patriots scored five runs on six hits and no errors. Hornung finished with nine strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Tipton went 2-for3 at the plate and two RBI to lead the Patriots.
Bulldogs scored six runs on 11 hits and two errors. The Pitcher Cameron Newman finished with seven strike- outs, two walks and gave up a home run in six innings on the mound. Reliever Jacob Crow finished on the mound with one strikeout and a walk. Javontae Pamplin (2-for-4), Keegan Schlotterbeck (2-for-4) and Jamari Pamplin (2-for-3) led Centerville at the plate.
