Wildcat duo among state competitors

Schatzle was among the first qualifiers to compete Friday afternoon as the finals got underway at Ben Davis High School, a temporary replacement for the traditional site of Indiana University-Bloomington.
In his first flight in long jump, Schatzle landed his best leap of the afternoon at 21 feet, 4.5 inches. His next was a little shorter at 21-00.25 and his third slightly less at 20-10.25. He was unable to advance to the final flights of the competition, where the 10 longest jumpers continued. The 10th-longest distance was 21-10 and the winner was Devin Mockobee of Boonville at 23-3.75. Schatzle ended in 13th place after coming in with a seed mark of 22-4.
Tschaenn, who placed 4th at regional in the 100-meter dash but got a callback as one of the 27 fastest in the state, would have to wait a little while for the track events to start. The FC senior raced in the first heat of the preliminary round, posting a time of 11.51 seconds; his seed time had been 11.11. The nine fastest (between 10.95 and 11.16) times across three heats qualified for the last race. Pioneer’s Ezra Lewellen won in a photo finish over Michigan City’s Esau Haynes (10.665 to 10.669). Tschaenn’s prelim time was good for 25th.
Batesville had three athletes at the meet. Gabe Gunter was 14th in high jump, topping out at 6-2. Fellow senior JJ Kuisel took 16th in the 400 (50.04) and junior Benjamin Moster was 26th in the 1600 run (4:33.89).
Leo Maxwell of East Central found himself on the medal podium in both discus and shot put. He was 4th in shot after throwing 59-8; Tucker Smith of Columbus North set a new state record after a toss of 67-11.25. Maxwell, a junior, was second only to Warren Central’s senior Keon Perkin-Sullivan in discus. Maxwell spun it 175-4 and Perkin-Sullivan 179-9. Teammate Nathan Griffin was in the state’s 300 hurdles field, taking 24th in a time of 41.95. Parker Sweet of Connersville took 24th in the 110 hurdles (16.02). Carmel was team champ.
EC’s Ellie Lengerich placed 7th in the 800 as the girls competed Saturday at Ben Davis. Her time was 2:13.77. Greensburg’s Brenner Hanna was 7th in the 1600 (5:00.41) and 18th in the 3200 (11:28). Lengerich, Anna Graf, Rachel Campbell and Jorjia Ferguson were 25th in the 4x400 relay (4:07.83). Lengerich took 12th in high jump (5-4) and 17th in long jump (17-5.5). Emarie Jackson of Greensburg was 17th in shot (38-00.25). Cathedral edged Warren Central for the team title.
