Be part of Indiana’s largest canoe race

By Makenna Mays-

For the first time since 2019, canoers will once again make their return to the scenic Whitewater River to take part in Indiana’s largest canoe race.

The canoe races will begin at the Brookville Lake Tailwaters beneath the Brookville Dam. As a reminder, Canoefest is allowed to begin there under a special permit and for race day only.

New to this year, the races will begin two hours later than they did in past years. The races will be on Saturday, June 26 and the events are:

Biathlon Canoe and Run (Solo) and Biathlon Canoe and Run (Team of two)
The biathlon begins combines an 8.4-mile canoe race and a 7.2-mile run. Racers will start at the Brookville Tailwater Recreation Area and canoe the length of the east fork where it meets the west and continue along the river until the end of the canoe segment at Morgan’s Canoe Rental in Cedar Grove. Racers will then dock their canoes where the foot race portion will begin, traveling south of S.R. 1 to River Road. Traveling north along River Road where there will be drink stations for participants. Racers will cross the finish line at Morgan’s Canoe Livery Brookville where transportation will be provided following. This event is 15.6 miles in total length. There will also be a biathlon where racers can compete in teams of two. Those participating in teams of two are asked to sign up both members of the team at the same time. The start time for these races is 10 a.m.

Champion Race (Solo) and Team of Two
The Championship Canoe Race is 8.4 miles in length. This course includes some Class 2 and Class 1 rapids. The race will begin at the tailwaters of Brookville Lake where it will run the entire length of the East Fork and join the West Fork. After joining the West Fork, the race will continue along the river until racers cross the finish line at Morgan’s Canoe Rental in Cedar Grove where transportation will be provided. A Championship Canoe Race for a team of two will also be taking place. These races are scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.

Recreational Canoe Race Solo and Team of Two
The Recreational Canoe Race also begins at the tailwaters of Brookville Lake. This race runs the entire course of the East Fork of the river where it joins the West Fork. The race will conclude right after entering the West Fork totaling two miles. Transportation will be available following the race. Both recreational races are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Also, new to Canoefest this year is the Friends and Family Float. Those looking to enjoy the beautiful Whitewater River, but not necessarily in a competitive way are in luck. The Friends and Family Float will begin at 11 a.m. at Morgan’s Canoe in Brookville and end at Morgan’s in Cedar Grove. Those interested in participating can bring their own canoe or kayak or rent one. A canoe or kayak is the preferred mode of travel for this event as a float device for that stretch would require some intense paddling.

There is still time to register for these races. To register as well as find additional information, visit brookvillecanofest.com.
