Ertel not only got the no-no in a 4-1 decision but also struck out 10 Knights and led FC in batting with three hits, including a double. SD’s lone run was triggered by a catcher’s interference call.
Joe Fields added a pair of base hits, including a triple, and Remy Watters knocked in two teammates.
The Cats had also taken a 4-1 game from SD on April 26. Ertel knocked in 2 on a triple and Austin Short doubled among his 2 hits. Fields gave up no earned runs for the complete-game win.
FC entered the week as No. 9 in Indiana’s Class 3A coaches’ poll – though lower this week – and hosted the coaches’ top pick in Class A, Oldenburg Academy, on Friday. Despite the accolades, it was a clumsy game overall with the teams combining for a dozen errors.
The home team scored one in the first before OA answered with four on sophomore Charlie Schebler’s grand slam home run. With neither team wanting to keep a lead, the game went back and forth until FC scored three unearned runs off Schebler to walk it off in the seventh.
With the bases juiced, Schebler plunked Kristian Prows to force in the winning run, 9-8. Chris Hautman started for the visiting Twisters and surrendered 6 unearned runs.
FC (10-5, 4-4 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference) will visit Greensburg May 5, turn around and host the Pirates Thursday and host Northeastern Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
