Kruthaupt, a senior, went undefeated in her events at a 3-way meet hosted by Connersville April 27 with Lawrenceburg also attending. The junior Schatzle did the same as FC’s boys took first place.
But Friday’s performance at the East Central Invitational was even better. Each set new school records, with Schatzle’s long jump of 22 feet, 7 inches breaking the stadium/meet record first set in 1984.
“We’ve noticed something about Jacob … as the competition ramps up, his demeanor changes and he locks in,” described Davidson. One coach said, “Jacob’s ready, this could be scary good.”
Davidson said his athlete’s warm-ups were smooth and explosive. “As a long jumper gets faster, steps can change,” he added. “Jacob’s been getting faster all year so it’s always a challenge to hit the board at full speed.”
The first leap was a scratch. The second looked a little subpar to his coach in technique, not in speed. “Twenty-two seven,” the meet official said. Davidson answered “Feet?” in shock. The jump would have placed 5th at the last contested state finals in 2019.
A subsequent jump over 22 feet would also have broken the FC standard.
“Grace has been on fire this season,” said Davidson. “She’s worked so hard in the offseason to become the absolute best she can be. It’s been inspiring to see.”
The senior needed to run the 100-meter hurdles twice to get the new record. Off to a good start in the first race, a gun went off, meaning timing officials were off and a restart was called for.
Kruthaupt was even better on her next try … “rhythmic and fast,” Davidson said. The coach went to the press box for official results, then told Grace to see her hurdling coach. “They’ve spent so much time perfecting the hurdles that I wanted him to tell her,” said Davidson. Kruthaupt had shattered the mark (16.06 to 16.42) and placed 5th.
Another school record went down at Connersville, courtesy of Drew Grant, Schatzle, Tyreke Carr and Hunter Tschaenn: the boys 4x100 team.
Grant is one of the newer sprinters and told his coach earlier this season he hadn’t taken a blind handoff since middle school. Carr was first out of the block and exchanged smoothly to Schatzle, the team’s top short sprinter who built a gap of about 30 meters. Grant took the baton and transferred it quickly to the anchor Tschaenn. FC’s No. 1 long sprinter flew down the stretch to finish in 43.55.
Kruthaupt had a great meet at CHS with a PR in the 100 hurdles and additional wins in 300 hurdles and the 4x100 relay along with Chloe Heffron, Audrey Harper and Madison Merritt. She joined Lauren Kelley, Merritt and Kamryn Dozier to win the 4x400. Schatzle also won long jump and the 100.
Kelley added individual wins in the 800 and 1600. Tschaenn claimed the 200 and Chad Cox won high jump (Lucas Stacy 2nd, Cole Rapp 3rd). Harper was first in the 100 and Grant, Carr, Tschaenn and Denver Meier returned to win the 4x400.
Senior Cam Smith captured the shot put competition, his 49-3 good enough for second all-time at FC.
Other PRs included Chase Bruns (discus; 120 ft.), Jacy Grimmeissen (100, long jump), Phoenix Simons (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump), Adam Grant (1600; 5:30.75), Maggie Riffle (shot, discus), Clayton Bolser (discus; 95 ft.), Owen Darwish (800), Earl Carr (400) and Hannah George (100).
With fierce competition at EC, the Cats managed 5th place for the boys (84 pts.) and 8th place for the girls (33).
Schatzle backed up his big, long jump with 4th in the 100 (11.26) and 3rd in pole vault (11-6). He ran 2nd in the 4x100 with Carr, D. Grant and Tschaenn (43.9). Kruthaupt was 3rd in the 200 (27.04) and placed 6th in the 4x400 (w. Merritt, Dozier and Kelley; 4:28.07) and 4x100 (w. Heffron, Harper and Merritt); 54.56).
Cox was runner-up in high jump (5-10). Kelley was 3rd in the 400 (1:04.57) and the boys 4x400 team of D. Grant, Carr, Tschaenn and Meier was 3rd in 3:35.04. D. Grant took 3rd in the 400 (53.71) and Cox 3rd in long jump (20-2.5).
Smith took 4th in discus (137 ft.) and Stacy 4th in high jump (5-8). Sam Westerfeld was 4th in long jump (20-00.75). Heffron finished 5th in pole vault (7-6) and Meier and D. Grant joined Hunter and Harmon Marshall for 5th in the 4x800 (9:01.19). Smith placed 5th in shot (44-5.5).
Kelley was 7th in both the 800 (2:32.57) and 1600 (5:45.37). Bailey Parkhurst threw 7th in shot (32-5). Meier was 7th in the 400 (54.64) and Tschaenn 7th in the 200 (23.34).
Also scoring in 8th were Tschaenn (100; 11.49), Ha. Marshall (400; 54.86) and Harper (100; 13.29).
