Trio of wins for softball

The Wildcat bats came alive in the sixth as they scored the tying five runs on five hits.
Bree Bischoff set the Pirates down in order in the top of seven to set up a great finish. Michaela Ferman launched an 0-1 pitch over the fence in center field for the game-winning walk-off homer.
“It was a really great team effort in the comeback with many people contributing throughout,” said coach Alex McCool. “Bree did a great job coming in to pitch in the sixth and seventh and the Wildcats never gave up on the game.”
Kassidy Schell also went yard in the game and had 4 RBI; she, Ferman, Kiersten Schell and Maci Lake had 2 hits each. Lake had a pair of steals. Kloe Bolos and Camryn Brewer knocked in one apiece.
FC won on the road Friday, defeating Knightstown 9-5. The Cats scored early and often and made hard contact all evening, finishing with a total of 15 hits and putting up runs in five separate frames.
McCool noted good defense and pitching as well. He called on Bischoff again, who kept the Panthers off balance and struck out 10; only two runs were earned.
Anne Becker and Ka. Schell had 3 hits each and the latter stole 2 bases. Bischoff added 2 singles and 3 RBI, Ki. Schell a single, double and RBI, Lake a single, triple and 2 RBI and Ferman 2 singles and 2 RBI. Josie Rolfes also had 2 singles.
FC put up crooked numbers in three different stanzas to overcome visiting Rushville Monday. The Lions fell by a 7-4 count.
The guests were up initially after Kendra Hamilton belted a no-doubt solo homer to center in the top of the first off Ferman. Ferman then struck out four of the next five batters.
The Cats went ahead in the bottom of the second, after a short delay. Ferman led off the inning and smoked a line drive off starter Kara Chandler’s forearm; the Lions’ pitcher exited the game. Becker reached on a fielder’s choice and gave way to courtesy runner Shaden Galyen. The next pitch from Rochelle Meyers was deposited well over the fence in left by Kiersten Schell for a 2-1 lead.
Rushville tied it in the third. Carley Jobe drew a leadoff walk and Briley Munchel singled to left. The run would come in on an infield hit to shortstop by Belle Gossett.
FC had something cooking in its half of the third. Ka. Schell walked and Rolfes reached on an infield single. With runners at second and third, though, Ferman’s low liner was picked off by Munchel at second; she threw to Hamilton to double up Rolfes.
Two walks helped the Lions load the bases in the fourth with just one out. Ferman got Jobe looking and coaxed a harmless pop-up to Lake at shortstop to end the threat.
The Cats broke the tie in the bottom of four. Becker was hit by a pitch – she would also be hit in each of her next two at-bats – and Galyen ran. Ki. Schell sacrificed her teammate to second. One out later, Brewer smashed a double to left to take the lead. Lake followed with another double to left, scoring Brewer.
The Lions got one back in the fifth. Gossett singled to center, as did Hamilton. Another single to center, off the bat of Grace Muir, plated Gossett. Ferman prevented further damage with two strikeouts and a diving play by Ka. Schell at second.
Meyers got out of her own bases-loaded situation in FC’s fifth. FC tacked on three important runs in the bottom of six. Brewer singled to left and Lake was hit by a pitch. Ka. Schell’s fly to right was misplayed. Each of those runners scored for the home team, the third on a wild pitch. Bischoff earned an RBI in the frame. With the bases jammed, Rushville escaped on an impressive 1-2-3 double play.
The last Lion run scored in the seventh as Hamilton walked and Muir singled to center. Around two Ferman punchouts, Jama Barnes drove in a run on an infield squibbler. Brewer retired Abby Herbert for the final out.
Ferman, Rolfes, Ki. Schell and Brewer had 2 hits apiece.
FC (9-6, 4-2) is at EIAC rival Connersville May 5.
