“It was a super big win,” UC coach Jordan Ashbrook said. “That’s UC baseball.”
After the Tigers off with a 2-0 first-inning lead, the Pats doubled that in the third inning with four runs to go ahead 4-2.
After a quiet fourth inning, Lawrenceburg answered in the fifth inning with a run that cut UC’s lead to 4-3.
Neither team scored in the sixth inning. Seventh inning action put all fans on the edge of their seats.
With Patriot pitcher Eric Burdine on the mound, the first Tiger hit a fly ball to shortstop Alex VanWinkle; the next batter was hit by a pitch. Then, a fielder’s choice at second base put Nolen Vertz on first with two outs. Vertz went to second on a wild pitch before Hunter Chase’s RBI single scored Vertz and tied the score, 4-4. The Patriots retired the side on a flyout to bring UC to the plate.
So, it all came down to the bottom of the seventh inning.
The first batter grounded out. Catcher Mason Wicker singled to centerfield and went on to second on a wild pitch. Out number two was a strikeout and brought Noah Taylor to the plate. He hit the fourth pitch between second and third with Lawrenceburg’s third baseman and shortstop attempting to make the play. They collided and Wicker rounded third base full steam. The throw to home plate was off target. Wicker scored and the Patriots pulled off an exciting 5-4 win.
