Friday was not only a celebration of new Franklin County Athletic Hall of Fame members, but also a chance to recognize current accomplishments and simply pushing through the past calendar year.

“Congratulations for doing what you did, to the parents for doing what they did and thanks to the IHSAA for being at the forefront of allowing our athletes to participate,” said high school athletic director Denny Dorrel. “I believe in the ability to adjust to adverse situations and that’s what we did this year in more ways than one.”

Dorrel also thanked school officials and office staff, assistant AD Brad Stacy, training staff, statisticians, clock keepers, announcers, student workers, the FC Athletic Booster Club and sponsors, event staff, and finally his wife and kids for a successful year.

As a lead-in to the HOF inductions, a student video was shown in which athletes welcomed sports back into their lives. Following were the FCHSpys, a takeoff of the popular ESPN sports awards.

Six candidates were up for Breakout Athlete of the Year and the awards went to sophomore Brant Ertel (tennis, basketball, baseball) and freshman Nicole Mears (tennis, basketball, golf).

The male Mental Attitude Award winner was senior Adam Kelly, Jr., who participated in football and golf. On the female side, senior Camryn Brewer (basketball, softball, golf) was honored for her positive attitude.

There were plenty of solid efforts up for Individual Performance of the Year. The girls award went to sophomore Josie Rolfes (soccer, basketball, softball), who deposited 28 points and six 3-pointers against Talawanda. On the boys end, it was junior Jacob Schatzle (track/field, football) for breaking a stadium and school record in the long jump (22’7”) at the East Central Invitational last month; a co-winner was senior Cole Rapp (soccer, track/field) for scoring three goals in seven minutes to lift the Wildcat soccer team to its first sectional win in two decades.

The male Athlete of the Year Award went to senior Hunter Tschaenn, a standout in football and track and field. Senior Grace Kruthaupt (soccer, track/field) won for the girls.

The Team of the Year came down to boys soccer for the sectional comeback win, football for a sectional runner-up and girls golf, which set two new school records and won the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference championship. The lady golfers, coached by Kendyl Brack, took home the award.
