When it comes to good softball weather, the weatherman has not been cooperative this season. Fortunately, Union County’s grounds crew is one of the best beginning with athletic director Ryan Overholt, coaches, dads, fathers, and fans who love to see the Lady Patriots play softball.

So it was on a Monday when the softball diamond at Johnny Welborn Field was inundated with rain and a home game with Monroe Central scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

The start time was delayed until 6:30 p.m. The infield was in good condition thanks to the grounds crew and patient parents and fans in the stands.
The Lady Patriots wasted no time in posting a five inning, 10-0 shutout of Monroe Central.

UC pitcher Bailey Mathews pitched the Lady Pats to a 7-0 lead in three innings and Annalea Adams, Shelby Hill and Chloe Greene led UC at the plate.

Adams hit home runs in her first two times at the plate. Hill hit a triple in the fourth and Greene was 2-for-3 with a home run and double.
Mathews allowed no runs, no hits and delivered five strikeouts. Then, in the final two innings, Greene struck out 6 and gave up one hit.
Union County put runs on the scoreboard in each inning on 10 hits and left 3 runners on base.

“We should have had more runs, but 10 was enough tonight,” UC coach Scott Gray said.
