Union County smacked Knightstown with a pair of losses at Bill Webb Field last Saturday.

The Patriots won the first game, 5-2, with Mason Hornung on the mound.
Union County bats gave pitchers Alex VanWinkle and Nate Reffitt plenty of backup in the second game 12-4 victory.

“Our pitchers have come along quite well,” UC coach Jordan Ashbrook said. “It’s nice to have that two-headed dragon (Hornung and VanWinkle) and then Nate to come on with a change up. It worked quite well today.”

Four consecutive hits in the first inning paved the way to the 5-2 TEC victory. John Ridenour, Eric Burdine and Mason Wicker hit back-to-back doubles and Hornung followed up with a single to give UC an early 3-0 lead.

Mason Tipton opened the second inning with another double and Ridenour’s RBI put the fourth UC run on the scoreboard.

Knightstown caught up with two runs in the sixth inning but the Pats equaled that number in the bottom of the inning and walked away with a victory.
Hornung finished with 12 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Wicker went 2-for-2 and Tipton 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UC.
The Patriots opened with 2 runs in the first inning and put the game out of reach in the third with 8 runs.

UC batted a complete round plus three in the run-away inning. Eight runs on eight hits including four doubles (Burdine, Hornung, Jaden Bias and Ridenour). The Patriots led 10-0 before the Panthers got on the scoreboard with 4 runs in the fifth inning.

“Fifth inning was frustrating, but we stayed focused the entire game,” Ashbrook said. “Until we high-five at the end of the game, we have to stay focused.”

The Pats added a pair of runs in the sixth inning to complete a 12-4 in style.
VanWinkle and Reffitt shared pitching duties. VanWinkle gave up 4 runs on 5 hits, walked 6 and issued one walk in six innings. Reffitt finished with 2 strikeouts.

Ridenour led the Patriots at the plate with 3 hits and scored 2 runs. VanWinkle, Hornung, Tipton and Burdine had 2 hits each.

At the end of the day, Union County stood 11-7 and third in the TEC at 4-2.K
