Michaela Ferman and Kara Chandler were locked in a pitcher’s duel, although the Wildcats loaded the bases twice off the latter. FC did scratch two runs across on five base hits to defeat the Lions. Rushville got five hits as well but also struck out 11 times against Ferman, who gave up zero earned runs. Josie Rolfes and Bella Lee had the Wildcat RBI and Kassidy Schell stole a base.
In another EIAC matchup Thursday, the Lady Cats fell 9-2 at South Dearborn. The Knights led 7-0 after five complete. FC finally got on the board in the top of six when senior Camryn Brewer drove in two on a double. Earlier in the third and fourth, the Wildcats had the bases loaded but failed to plate runs. Brewer added a single and Kiersten Schell slapped a pair of singles.
FC hosted a 6-school invitational over the weekend. Other competitors were Blackford, Union Co., Norwell, Eastern Hancock and Salem.
Starting off with 22-1 E. Hancock, the hosts held the Royals to no baserunners through three frames while scoring five times themselves. EH had 11 hits – including three home runs - in the last four innings to win 8-5. Ferman was 3-of-4 while Rolfes and Bree Bischoff (RBI) were each 2-of-4.
The next game saw the Cats blow open a 4-4 game with nine runs (after two were out) on nine hits in the top of the seventh to defeat the Blackford Bruins 13-4. Blackford had tied the game on two unearned runs in the bottom of six. Brewer (2 doubles), Ka. Schell (2 triples), Rolfes, Anne Becker and Maci Lake each had a pair of knocks. Becker drove in 4; the other four had 1 RBI each. Lake swiped 2 bags. Ferman fanned 4 and Bischoff 4 in the circle.
In the third-place game, costly errors cost the home team a chance at bronze. FC held another 5-0 lead on the strength of homers by Kloe Bolos and the Schell twins in the fourth, but Salem scored four in the fifth and continued scoring to win 8-7. The Wildcats outhit Salem 15-7; of the Lions’ 8 runs, only 2 were earned. Becker had 3 hits while the Schells, Brewer, Ferman and Lake added 2 each; Ka. Schell had 3 RBI and Ferman 2.
All-tournament nods went to Kassidy Schell and Ferman. Ferman also broke a 29-year-old school record when she drew her 24th walk of the season.
Senior night is May 19 as Cambridge City Lincoln provides the opposition. FC visits Greensburg Thursday and will face Lawrenceburg Monday to kick off the Connersville sectional.
