Franklin County girls tennis got a trio of positions through to the semifinals of the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Greensburg late last week.

Kacie Williams at No. 3 singles, along with the doubles teams of Rae Ertel and Grace Roth and Kaylin Knapp and Nicole Mears, advanced past Thursday’s opening round before falling in the semis on Saturday.

Playing in the No. 1 doubles flight, Ertel and Roth drew Rushville’s Juliana Simmermon and Josie Fields for starters and won by a 6-1, 6-3 final. On the No. 2 doubles courts, Mears and Knapp also started with Rushville and defeated Lilly Yager and Isabella Wilson quickly, 6-0, 6-1. Williams dealt with Connersville’s Bailey Wilson in the opener and had no problem, posting a 6-0, 6-1 decision.

Returning two days later, Williams was dropped by Chloe Saler of Batesville (6-4, 6-2). Mears and Knapp fell to the host school’s Janae Comer and Hailey Duerstock, 6-3, 6-3. Ertel and Roth lost in straight sets to Lawrenceburg’s Ella McAndrew and Cali Pope (6-4, 6-1).

The LHS duo went on to win the flight at No. 1, easily defeating Connersville. At 2 doubles, East Central won with Lacey Kelly and Avery Daniels. Saler lost to Lawrenceburg’s Evelyn McAndrew in the finals.

Allie Routh (No. 1 singles) and Elise Klei (No. 2) lost their opening-round matches, Routh to Greensburg’s Jenna Foster (6-4, 6-0) and Klei to Lawrenceburg’s Gracie Safaviyan (6-4, 6-1). Safaviyan eventually lost in the finals to EC’s Payton Pies in three sets while Heidi Kane was crowned EIAC champ by defeating LHS’ Elle McMullen 6-0, 6-0. McMullen also earned all-conference as runner-up.

East Central won the team title with a 7-0 mark this spring. FC was third at 5-2, just behind Lawrenceburg’s 6-1.

Connersville and Rushville is a first-round matchup at the Connersville Sectional. The other is Union County/Franklin Co. The sectional starts Wednesday, May 19, 5 p.m.
