Union County played two good games across the state line at the Dayton Dragons’ Day Air Ball Park on Saturday, May 22.

Seton Catholic got by the Patriots, 7-6, in the first game of the doubleheader, but UC came back with a 2-0 shutout over Cowan in the second game.

Union County led, 1-0, after the first inning and 2-0 after the fourth inning before Seton went ahead, 6-2, on six runs in the fifth inning. The Cardinals added another run in the sixth inning.

Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, UC charged back with leadoff batter, Eric Burdine, reaching first when hit by pitch and courtesy runner Grady Swafford inserted at first base. Swafford stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before a Mason Wicker RBI triple to left field. Mason Hornung’s single into left field scored Wicker and cut the lead to 7-4.

After a Seton pitching change (Moynihan for Leverton), Hornung went to second on a passed ball, Mason Tipton was walked and Noah Taylor was hit by pitch to fill the bases.

Then with one out and two on, a balk scored Hornung and runners moved to second and third. Blake Richards followed with a single that scored Tipton and brought Taylor to third.

UC filled the bases again with a walk to VanWinkle. John Ridenour hit into a fielder’s choice that stopped Taylor heading for home and stopped the Patriots’ sixth inning comeback.

Seton Catholic went down one, two, three in the top of the seventh inning. The Patriots put two runners on (Hornung and Bias) in the bottom of the inning, but fell short overall, 7-6.

Leverton was the winning pitcher with five runs on seven hits, eight strikeouts, and a walk. Moynihan finished the final two innings in relief.
UC pitcher Alex VanWinkle allowed six runs on six hits, five strikeouts and one walk in 4.2 innings. Relievers Matthew Wooley and Burdine finished on the mound.

Union County had eight hits with VanWinkle and Hornung leading with two hits each.
