Lady Patriots Basketball– UC girls tough at scrimmage

The girls basketball scrimmage at the Spartan Bowl last week was a good start for Union County.

“Overall, I was extremely pleased,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “These ladies played extremely hard.”

Of the 15 girls out this season, three are seniors, three are juniors, one’s a sophomore and eight freshmen.

Due to the success of the volleyball team and some girls deciding not to come out this season, UC went into the scrimmage with five days of practice with all of them on board.

Yet Gray and the Lady Patriots are optimistic, working hard and excited to get going.

“Offensively we are totally different from last year, totally different,” Gray said. “Probably totally different than we’ve been for the last 5-6 years.”

Union County is coming off a 16-6 season led by 5’11” Madison Gray and 6’0” Sophia Knock. Gray graduated last spring with the girls school record for  most career points (1,593) and career rebounds (625). Knock will graduate in 2022 and has committed to playing college softball.

“We have to play a lot more outside stuff and shoot the ball from three-point area, which we did a  pretty good job at scrimmage. I think we made six 3-pointers,” the coach said. “We are so guard oriented,  we have to drive to the basket more and are more spread out than ever before.”

On the roster of 15, fourteen are healthy right now.

“We’re still waiting on Shelby to return. Hopefully by sometime late December, January we can get her back,” Gray said.

Shelby Hill, UC’s #1 setter, went down with a knee injury during the volleyball season. She remains on the basketball roster while in therapy and assists with manager duties.

“If we can get her back, that will make a huge difference,” Gray said.

Hill, a 5’10” force inside for Union County  last season, will bolster the current roster which averages approximately 5’5”.

“They played extremely hard Saturday. They are embracing what we are trying to do, how different we are having to play and they are really starting to get it,” Gray said. “That’s a big plus for us.”

Looking at the UC girls basketball program, Gray says he sees a lot of guards coming and not big at all.

“That’s okay. We can play any way we have to,” he said while directing a practice session. “You can’t measure heart, can’t measure heart. We’ve got the best of the best girls playing. Great kids with good parents and so far they have been a blessing to coach and fun to be around.”

Friday, Nov. 5 is UC’s first  game of the season and it is at home.

“We’re excited about it, excited to get going,” Gray said. “First home game against Milan. We’re ready for that.”
