The Union County Lady Patriots gave way to Franklin County's size last Friday evening, 49-29.

UC stayed close through the first quarter and led, 8-6, before the Lady Wildcats moved on in the second period.

A 5'9” junior Josie Rolfes led all scoring with 16 points - with six points apiece in the fourth and first quarters. Junior Faith Richardson led Union County with 12 points on two field goals and 8-of-11 free throws.

“We are a very small stature team and opponents pick up on that and that's what happened tonight,” UC coach Scott Gray said. “They try to take away our 3-point shots, so that turns us into driving and tonight we did a much better job of it but didn't finish.”

FC led by four, 17-13, at halftime and 27-20 at the three-quarter stop.

“You gotta' make baskets. That's the next piece of the puzzle. You can drive in, but you got to finish,” Gray said. “We didn't do a very good job of that tonight, but we will get better and see what happens down the road.”

The physical game found Franklin County making 16 baskets and 14-of-16 at the charity stripe. Union County finished with seven field goals and 15-of-23 free throws.

“You're not going to win on seven shots,” Gray said. “We gotta' make baskets, that's the bottom line.”

Junior Kassidy Schell added 13 points for the home team and sophomore Nicole Mears put in 8.

Franklin County improved to 4-2 on the season while UC stands at 2-2.
