The Franklin County Youth Football Kindergarten/1st grade (class of 2033 & 2034) team traveled to Knoxville, Tennesse for the “Battle in Rocky Top'' national youth football tournament Nov. 19-20.

This tournament features youth football teams from all over the Midwest and South, showcasing some of the best young football players in the United States. The Wildcats were seeded in the 6-Under central division and advanced to the semifinals by winning their first two matchups against The Roane Co. Nationals and The Hendersonville Titans.

“Our team had a great season! We really came together as a group and I could not be prouder of these little boys,” says Jonathan White, head coach of the K/1 team. “We went down to Knoxville really not knowing what to expect; our boys really did their community proud!”

The other teams in the tournament were made up of all-star players that drew from 10-12 high school regions or more. The Wildcat youth team took only kindergarteners and 1st graders from the Franklin County school system. The Wildcats eventually fell to the Tri-Cities Fury team 12-8 in the semifinals.

“I told the boys this was all bonus football, to be able to go down there and have extra games and extra time together was the icing on the cake after an amazing season,” said White.

The K/1 Wildcats finished an undefeated regular season by winning the West division of the Tri-State Youth Football (TYFA) playoffs. They eventually fell in overtime of the Super Bowl in another very closely contested game.

St. Michael first grader Gunner Gillman led the Wildcats, scoring 39 touchdowns during the season. “Gunner is a very special little player; he made his coaches look smarter than we really are!” his coach added.

When asked what White was looking forward to the most for next season, he said, “I am so excited to add more kids to this very special group of players. I am hoping all these kids come back to play again next year and they all bring at least one buddy with them. I believe the more kids we get involved with the football program, the better it is for the community. Football is the only sport where it is a county team from the get-go, that creates a huge bond that carries these kids through high school and beyond.”
