A year ago, FC made a highly improbable comeback late in the game at Lawrenceburg to force overtime and defeat the Greensburg Pirates. Monday evening on the turf field at South Dearborn High School, the host Knights made sure there wouldn’t be a repeated outcome.
The Knights scored at will throughout the opening half and added a few more after the intermission to see the referees invoke the mercy rule with 20 minutes remaining in the match. Final was 12-0, with the Wildcats on the short end of a shutout for the fifth time this season; the FC team was unable to secure a victory in 2021, battling through an 0-13 campaign.
By halftime, the score was 9-0 as the FC defense welcomed the break from Knight attacks. SD’s Dana Lewis got scoring underway at 36:38 of the first period. Just before the 30-minute mark, the Knights landed another to make it 2-0.
At 29:38, Lewis got loose again to put FC at a quick 3-0 deficit. The Wildcats fought to a stalemate for the next 12 minutes, but Brodie Teke connected with 16:45 on the clock. Less than a minute later, SD shot a ball that was deflected off the crossbar by the goalie, sophomore Nathan Armbruster; Austyn Tibbs corralled the rebound and laid it in for a 5-0 lead.
At 14:22, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick and Hunter Garland kicked to the left of the keeper into the netting. Garland made it a 7-0 game with 11:50 left in the half, firing in from about 25 yards out. At 9:17, Lewis found himself in the goalie box and booted a diagonal score to the goalkeeper’s right. With a running clock, Ashton Cotton scored off a deflection around the 2:48 mark.
About eight minutes into the second half, Cotton scored again on a 1v1. Cotton set a single-season SD record for assists at 23:25 when he found Lewis to complete the latter’s hat trick. Easton Schumann rounded out the night’s scoring just ahead of the final whistle.
FC will graduate Juan Simancas and Jayden Taylor from the young squad.
