ANDERSON – The young Franklin County girls golf team had a valuable experience at the Lapel Regional played at The Edge Golf Club in Anderson Sept. 25. Facing some of the state’s top competition, however, the Lady Wildcats weren’t in the upper echelon of finishers vying for a spot at the state finals.

The Cats shot a total of 421, the 16th-lowest score of participating teams and 90 strokes behind Batesville at 331; the Bulldogs finished in third place, qualifying for the state meet for the first time in school history.

Sophomore Nicole Mears led the Wildcat effort with a card of 91, the only team member to record double digits. Classmate Crystal Calihan was next at 102 and senior Kelsie Brackney concluded her FC career with an 18-hole round of 107. Sophomore Jacy Grimmeissen was the fourth entry and posted a 121.

Noblesville edged Hamilton Southeastern 313-315 for the title. HSE’s Yanah Rolston shot an excellent 69 to win the regional. Batesville junior Emma Weiler was tied for third overall with a 75. Teammates Josie Meyer and Addyson Weiler were at 80 and 81, respectively. BHS’ Tori Harpring recorded 95.

Richmond’s Esther Etherington qualified for state by shooting 80. Other finishes of note were Union County taking 9th (382; Emma Kassens 90) and Greensburg 15th (416; Sarah Stapp 93) and Rushville scoring 445 (Isabella Wilson 100). Oldenburg Academy’s Emerald Simmonds fired 103.

Batesville traveled to Prairie View Golf Club, Carmel for 36 holes across two days beginning Friday morning. The Bulldogs were 14th out of 15 complete teams but E. Weiler made the all-state team for the third consecutive year, shooting a 75 after an uncharacteristic 87 on the first day of the finals.
