LAWRENCEBURG – For a second straight year, the Franklin County girls soccer team had the “privilege” of facing off against the Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers to start postseason play. This time around, LHS – one of the stronger programs in the area – also had the advantage of playing on its home turf, Thursday, Oct. 7.

For a little over 16 minutes, it appeared the Wildcats had discovered ways to limit the Tigers’ offensive prowess. Lawrenceburg had a couple early tries, both unsuccessful and one hitting the goal post. FC goalkeeper Maegan Pearson earned a save under the 35-minute mark and another off a restart at 31:30. Yet one more save kept the game nil-nil as the clock went under 30 minutes in the half.

The Tigers remained on the attack, though, and it finally yielded a goal at 23:47. By halftime, it was a 4-0 game with a final score of 8-0.

Chloe Meyer gathered in a pass from the side for the first goal, beating Pearson to the ball and pushing it into the netting. Just ahead of the 20-minute point, Hannah White controlled a loose ball in front of the goal and sent a diagonal shot to Pearson’s left for a 2-0 lead. Despite a foul on Meyer, LHS was undeterred and added a third goal with 10:38 left in the first period.
Elle McMullen got around both back-liner Kaitlyn Brunemann and Pearson for the 3-goal lead. With just over 7 minutes to go before the break, Pearson was shaken up and gave way to Liz Wendel for the next three minutes. She returned in time to see Lucy Thornton race in from midfield and lay it in at 1:41 for a 4-0 advantage.

Early in the second half, LHS earned a penalty kick after a Wildcat hand ball in the goalie box. Kalana Kent’s kick was true to make it 5-0. Not three minutes later, the Tigers nearly had a sixth goal but were whistled for offsides. Number six came shortly after when a Tiger free kick bounded off a teammate’s head into the net.

From the top of the 18, Kyra Abbott landed a goal with 28:30 remaining in the match. Isabella Ireland-Gilmour capped off the night’s scoring.
South Dearborn defeated LHS 1-0 in the finals as both Knight teams advanced to soccer regional action. The boys beat Batesville 3-0 in the sectional final.

FC had a winning campaign at 6-5-4. Halee Barker, Morgan Stewart, Jordan Nichols, Brunemann and Claudia Mauntel are this year’s seniors.

Win, draw
Franklin County girls soccer had a tremendous senior night Sept. 23, downing Greensburg 8-2. Nichols went off with a 5-goal effort, the best individual performance in the past decade. She ranks 3rd in the conference in scoring and Kamryn Dozier ranks 7th.

Erica Weaver had 4 assists and Mauntel 2. Each ranks among the league leaders in the category. Nichols had 2 assists, Stewart 1 assist and 2 goals and Barker 1 goal. Pearson and Wendel had 1 save each in goal.

The team had adversity against Oldenburg Sept. 27, playing with just 9 players. “The team played a difficult high-pressure game and refused to be beaten,” said coach Cindy Adams. The match ended 0-0. Nichols had 2 shots at goal and Bethany Melugin 1. Pearson racked up 13 saves.

Player of the Match was Dani Bulach. She won possession and forced turnovers, especially late in the match.
