Union County moved back into the win column with a solid 21-6 win over the Warriors on Senior Night.
Wes-Del went to work early with an 80-yard touchdown drive late in the first quarter. Sophomore quarterback Evan Whitesell called nine plays before senior running back Evan Kelly found the end zone. The PAT kick failed but the Warriors carried a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.
Eager to get on the scoreboard, UC senior Reece Watterson scored from 3-yards out. Ragen Bias ran the PAT to put the Patriots on top 7-6 with 5:06 left in the half.
Wes-Del came back strong with what appeared to be a successful TD drive in the closing seconds of the half. Working on a first-and-ten at the 14-yard line, Blevins’ pass deep in the end zone was good before the official ruled the receiver was out-of-bounds.
The Patriots began the second half on offense. Nine plays and eight minutes later, senior running back Blake Richards ran untouched, through traffic, to score the Pats’ second touchdown.
Union County’s defensive unit limited the Warriors to four downs in each of the next two possessions.
When the Patriots were hot, the Warriors were not. Union County out-scored WD, 21-0, in the final three quarters.
UC added its final touchdown in the fourth quarter when Wes-Dell was forced to punt on fourth-and-nine.
Waiting deep in UC territory, junior receiver Evan Wolf hauled it in and returned it 87 yards for the Pats’ final touchdown. Add Watterson’s PAT run to make it a 21-6 and give UC a winning 4,3 season record.
Patriots touchdowns all came on the ground thanks to the offensive line and game plan.
It wasn’t all offense, the Patriots defense caused three turnovers, including a pair of pass interceptions.
Wes-Del finished with 100 passing yards that was cut short by Memphis Kratzer. The UC freshman’s fourth quarter interception at mid-field and return 10 yards put the icing on the cake before officials began a flag-throwing contest in the final 2-3 minutes.
