Union County will be represented by a pair of juniors and a sophomore at the IHSAA Cross Country Regionals at Rushville on Saturday, Oct. 16 .

The duo of juniors Marissa Young and Johanna Nelson and sophomore Haley Alcorn have led the Lady Patriots throughout the season and didn’t let up at sectional. The UC trio were among the top ten individuals to advance to the regional at Rushville on Saturday.

“I was confident that we would have some representation at this year’s regional,” UC coach Phil Cox said. “The question was how many would make it.”

Young was the 17th overall finisher in 24:19. Nelson and Alcorn finished back-to-back in 35th (26:08) and 36th (26:16) places.

“We definitely had a game plan for the race, sending Marissa out with a planned pace and putting Haley and Jo together to help each other,” Cox explained.

New Castle junior Ella Garvin won the race in 21:22 with Centerville’s Chloe Scales (21:25) and Bailey Puckett of Lincoln (21:25) in pursuit.
The top five teams at sectional and the top 10 individual runners not on an advancing team move on to regional competition.

“Marissa easily got in as an individual and Haley and Jo pulled it out and qualified 9th and 10th to move onto regionals,” Cox said. “We didn't realize how close the girls team was in qualifying for regional -- we had a sixth- place finish just behind Hagerstown by 1 point in fifth place.”

The Centerville girls beat out second place New Castle, 37-48, to win the team title.

The Northeastern Knights won the boys’ team title two points ahead of Hagerstown second place, 66-68.

“I congratulate the boys for a strong showing at sectional.” Cox said. “The level of competition was just too much for us to handle this year.”

Bradley Meadows and team captain Jack Hodgkin completed the course in 21:26 and 22:25 to lead the Patriots.

“I thank junior Jack Hodgkin for his leadership role this season,” Cox said. “We have a young boys team and I am expecting a competitive boys team next year.”

Jack Dodd graduates this spring but freshmen Logan Boone and Landon Klingman will return for next season.

Mylan Nocton was the individual winner of the boys race in 17:21 with Andrew Fewell of New Castle (17:37) and Northeastern’s Chase Cates (17:44) in pursuit.
