Union County girls soccer team defeated Knightstown, 3-1, last week to advance to the championship game of the IHSAA Girls Soccer Sectional at Knightstown.

“I think it is amazing that they won with so many new girls,”UC coach Brad Abbott said. “And so many bad breaks during the season.”

The Lady Patriots list one freshman, but several older girls are playing soccer for the first time this season.

The 3-1 win over Knightstown was the result of two first half goals by junior Brooklyn Vauthier and Sophia Knock’s goal after the break.

Knock has been UC’s starting goalie for four years, but has always wanted to change positions. Abbott made it happen in the sectional game with Knightstown.

“I put her in at halftime and she scored the final goal,” Abbott said.

But when the championship game rolled around, Knock was busy taking care of business in her goalie position.

The Lady Patriots fell to Muncie Burris, 4-1, in the Saturday night sectional championship game.

UC trailed, 1-0, at halftime and 3-0 before senior Brooklyn Vauthier put one in the goal with 6:34 on the clock and Burris scored on more time.

“They did a good job tonight,” Abbott said of the 1-16-1 season. “It wasn’t a bad season and you don’t have to have a winning season to get to sectional. I think it is amazing at what these girls have done. I guess we did something right.”
