The Lady Patriots held off a late EH surge to win a 25-22 decision in the first set, never trailed in the second set (25-21) and needed extra points to win the third set, 31-29.
“That match was fun, especially the one set,” UC coach Allison Kassens said. “I have faith in my girls even when we are down.”
The Lady Pats trailed in the first two sets and came back to win. The third set was a battle from start to finish with too many tie scores to count. With the score tied at 25, set point/match was held off by four more tie scores before UC pulled it out, 31-29.
Kassens calls few timeouts but when she does, the message is clear and the team responds.
“I call timeouts to get them back together to remind them to have faith in each other, keep their heads held high, continue to fight and don’t give up,” she said.
Knightstown also won a long 3-2 match over Northeastern in the second match.
The Lady Pats defeated Centerville, 3-0, in the semi-final round. UC never trailed in the match and was tied one time in the second set when Centerville replaced a six-point deficit with a 25-25 tie and a Union County timeout.
“I needed to remind them to focus on keeping their heads up high, to work as a team and focus on the basics,” Kassens said.
Back on the court, the Patriots won, 27-25.
The second semi-final match between Knightstown and Hagerstown went five sets with the Lady Tigers winning 3-2. That set the championship match between Union County and Hagerstown.
Championship Match
It was the second meeting between Union County and Hagerstown and the result was reversed when it counted. Hagerstown won the first meeting in three sets.
The Lady Patriots defeated the Lady Tigers in five sets at last Saturday’s 2021 IHSAA Class 2A volleyball sectional championship at Union County.
“ Still dumbstruck over last night’s win,” UC coach Kassens said the day after the championship match. “Before last night’s match, the girls and I sat in our locker room and held a power pose for one minute – something that has been proven to be helpful in getting you ready for a highly anticipated event. Meanwhile I reiterated to them that they deserved to win.”
UC won the first two sets without falling behind (25-22, 26-24) although the second set required extended play.
Hagerstown came back strong to hand the Lady Pats a pair of setbacks, 25-17 in the third set and 25-12 in the fourth.
The fifth and deciding set was Union County payback time and they did it with team-work and don’t-give-up attitude. The Lady Tigers lost the set, 15-12, and the match 3-2.
“Coach Dale runs a great program at Hagerstown. While I played in high school, he coached at Hagerstown and as a player, I always had a great deal of respect for him. Even more now as a coach,” Kassens said. “It was very clear that his girls also have a great deal of respect for him by their response from them on the court. They made it a very challenging win after fighting back in set 3 and set 4, making set 5 even more intense.”
Hagerstown finished the season with a 17-6 record. The Lady Pats now stand 18-8 with more to come.
The Lady Patriots advanced to the IHSAA Class 2A Regional at Cascade on Saturday, Oct. 23, to take on Covenant Christian (24-6) in the second match at approximately noon. South Putnam and Western Boone play in the first match at 10 a.m. The championship will be played Saturday at 7 p.m.
