Union City
The Union County Lady Patriots headed north last week to engage the Union City Lady Indians in a Tri-Eastern Conference volleyball match. The Lady Pats needed four sets to gain the Tri-Eastern Conference win.

After dropping the first set, 32-30, the Lady Patriots roared back with three consecutive wins, 25-22, 25-10, 25-18.

“We had no winning mentality. Their spikers kept holding us back,” coach Allison Kassens said. “I just told them to go for it.”

The Indian spikers were no match for Union County’s middle hitter, Elyse Peters (22 kills and 3 blocks), and outside sidekicks Hanna Vaughn (5 kills), Chloe Greene (5 kills), Hannah Wulf (5 blocks and 4 kills) and Autumn Cantrell (8 kills).

“Elyse (Peters) is fun to watch, very disciplined,” Kassens said. “It’s exciting to see the complete turnaround since last year.”

The Union City match was Wulf’s first game back due to Covid regulations.

“It was good to have her back in the line-up again,” Kassens said. “We worked hard to get her blocking back.”

Blend in the Patriots’ dig ‘em up trio - Shelby Hill (18 digs), Brooke Fields (14 digs), Kasey Lang (12 kills), and Hill also topping the assists list with 39 assists, that is a good recipe for a well-balanced volleyball team.

Union City had an early 6-3 lead in the second set but failed to keep pace in the final three sets.

Union County’s junior varsity opened the evening with a 2-0 shutout of National Trails’ JV.

The junior Lady Pats won 25-15 and needed only three servers in the second set to win 25-3. Freshman Ava Rambo served 10 consecutive points to start  and classmate Emma Wooley wrapped up the 25-3 win with 13 service points.
