The Union County offense was dominant especially in the first half - three touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the second.
The Patriots’ defense was equally strong, keeping the Panthers deep in their own territory and off the scoreboard. Knightstown was limited to four plays per possession throughout the game and did not score until the fourth quarter.
Ragen Bias scored the first UC touchdown from 6 yards out. Three minutes later, the Panthers mistakenly allowed Bias to sweep around left end. The 6’3 senior easily out-sprinted all defenders along the sideline for a 52-yard TD. Senior teammate Gabe Cox added PAT kicks after both TDs.
“Ragen took a couple of what we thought were late hits so we took him out to rest him,” UC coach Joel Hofmann said. “And decided he would not play the second half. We want him ready for Hagerstown.”
The Patriots host the 1-1 Tigers this Friday night at Curry/Phenis Field.
The Patriots scored again before the quarter ended. Michael Eversole scored on a 60-yd. Bias pass to put the 175 lb. junior in the end zone from 60-yards out.
Riding on a 20-0 lead at the break, UC picked up in the second quarter where they left off with Reece Watterson and Evan Wolf doing the honors. Reece went in from the 1-yard line and Wolf also scored from the one. Halftime score stood at 34-0.
Scoring fell off in the second half, but the Patriots put two touchdowns on the scoreboard before the end of the game.
“We don’t have numbers to a JV, so we slowed it down in the second half,” Hofmann said. “So we played our younger guys to give them an opportunity to learn . gain more experience in the second half,” Hofmann said.
Eversole scored UC’s final touchdown from his quarterback position on a fourth-and-one with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
“Eversole did everything we asked him to do,” Hofmann said. “We’re lucky he played this year.”
Knightstown’s Jarred Smith hauled in a pass at the 15 yard line and reached the end zone in the first minute, 12 seconds into the fourth period. A good PAT kick replaced the zero on the scoreboard with a 7.
Then, with 2:22 left in the game, starting at their own 41 yard line, the Patriots scored one more time. On the 10th play of the drive, junior Matthew Wooley went in from the 14-yard line to set the final score at 46-7.
