Lady Patriots Volleyball– UC girls rolling along

The battle between Union County and Connersville went five full sets last week on the volleyball court at Roy E. Stevens Gymnasium.
The Lady Spartans won the first set (25-20), UC set the Spartans back (25-13) in the second set and the visitors won the third set (25-16).
“One thing we need to work on is to come out strong, come out quick,” UC coach Allison Kassens said after the game went five sets.
Numerous tie scores in the fourth set kept fans on the edge of their seats right down to the final tie (26-26).
“Art Phenis, our #1 supporter always PMA - Positive Mental Attitude,” Kassens said. “I used that tonight, PMA, let’s take charge and after that...”
The Lady Patriots won set four, 28-26.
PMA continued in the final set. Connersville held a 3-1 lead, but could not keep pace with UC servers. Kasey Lang served four consecutive points, including three aces. Chloe Greene added an ace before UC won, 15-9.
“These girls are willing to fight for each and every point and I think they proved it tonight against Connersville,” Kassens said. “I trust in the girls to know what to do.”
Greene and Elyse Peters led UC with 17 and 13 kills, respectively. Brooke Fields and Greene finished with 23 and 22 digs. Shelby Hill made 38 of the team’s 45 assists.
“We had a tough match last night against New Castle. I think we are worn out,” Connersville coach Stephanie Smith said. “It was a tough match. We gave them a good run that’s for sure.”
Winchester
The Union County volleyball team handed Winchester a 3-0 setback last week.
“Yes in three, a sweep tonight,” Kassens said. “We needed it after last night.”
The Lady Patriots defeated Connersville in five sets (3-2) the previous night.
The Lady Patriots improved to 3-0 in the Tri-Eastern Conference by defeating the visiting Lady Falcons, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21. Winchester dropped to a 2-0 in the TEC.
Winchester went ahead, 4-3, early in the first set. UC hitters struck back to go ahead by 4 (17-13) and win by eight (25-17).
Winchester led in the second set, 12-8, before Fields came on to serve. The UC junior served six service points including two aces, to change the lead to 15-12, The Lady Falcons rallied to lead, 21-20, before Kassens called timeout.
“I must say the right things in the timeouts because every time they come back,” Kassens said. “They know that I believe in them and their abilities to perform and they took control at the end of the game.”
UC won the second set, 25-23. But Winchester wasn’t convinced until UC won the third set, 25-21.
Greene had 15 kills, Fields 15 digs and Hill 30 assists to lead Union County.
The match with Lincoln on Thursday, Sept. 9, has been cancelled. U C returns home to host Lawrenceburg on Monday, Sept. 13.
