RICHMOND - Firing one of their best collective rounds of the 2021 campaign, the Franklin County girls golf team claimed runner-up at the IHSAA sectional at Richmond’s Elks Club Friday, Sept. 17.

The total of 358 was second only to the host Lady Red Devils, who shot 340. Union County, boasting the sectional champion Emma Kassens (79) and third-place golfer Peityn Gillman (82), took the third and final regional-qualifying spot with 368. Richmond’s Esther Etherington was runner-up with a card of 80.

Pacing the Wildcat effort was sophomore ace Nicole Mears, turning in an 83. Classmate Crystal Calihan trailed her closely with a final of 88. Another sophomore, Lillie Graf, landed a 91 and senior Kelsie Brackney rounded out the team scoring with a 96 effort. Sophomore Jacy Grimmeissen was the fifth competitor for the Cats; she turned in a 112.

Three girls also moved on without the benefit of a team score. Centerville’s Alexandra Goodwin shot 85, Alison Frost of Cambridge City Lincoln fired 91, as did Baylee Wisler of Northeastern.

The Lapel Regional takes place Saturday at Anderson’s Edgewood Golf Club. Action is set to begin at approximately 9 a.m. The top three teams will move on to the state finals, as well as the lowest five scores that aren’t accompanied with an advancing team final.

Three days earlier, FC hosted UC and Connersville for senior night as Brackney was recognized. The Cats won with a score of 172 and Brackney’s final round at Brook Hill was 44. Mears led with 40 and Calihan 42. Graf shot 46, Grimmeissen 47 and Kadence Leffingwell 56.
